SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY
There are many ways to express language such as speaking,
using sign language, writing, and using computerized
communication devices. Speech-Language Pathologists
(sometimes called Speech Therapists) are professionals who
are trained to assess speech and language development, treat
language and speech disorders, and help people with
swallowing disorders.  After all, language is our most human
characteristic.

Language is different from speech. Language is a code made
up of a group of rules that include the meaning of words, the
creation of new words, the process of combining words, and
the proper word combinations applied to related situations.

A receptive problem exists when a person cannot understand
the language code.  An expressive problem means that a
person does not know enough language rules to express
thoughts, ideas, and feelings correctly. Receptive and
expressive problems can occur independently or in
combination.

The language code can be correct, but if the right body parts
are not moved at the right time, then the message will not
sound correctly. People with speech problems include (but are
not limited to) stuttering; as well as people whose voices
sound rough, hoarse, or nasal.

Language and speech problems can exist individually or in
combination. Whether the problem is mild or severe, a
comprehensive evaluation by a certified (American
Speech-Language Hearing Association) Speech-Language
Pathologist is the first step towards improving language and
speech problems.
